- AI Testing vs Testing AI: Understanding the Impact of AI on the Testing World
As AI becomes increasingly integrated into everyday life, we, in the software testing community are not immune to its effects. With AI influencing everything from consumer products to enterprise platforms, testers are now faced with a dual challenge: Testing AI (ensuring AI-based systems function correctly) and AI testing (using AI to test software). But what does this mean for the future of software quality engineering, and how is AI changing the testing landscape? The Impact of AI in Testing The exponential growth of AI has caused ripples across various industries, and software testing is no exception. This means learning new tools, techniques, and methodologies for QA engineers to stay relevant in a rapidly evolving tech environment. But what exactly has AI changed for testers? AI Features in Products The integration of AI technology into software products has surged dramatically in recent years. Companies are either hopping on the AI bandwagon or using AI to improve their products and services, often making AI a core selling point. For example, the explosion of chatbots, recommendation systems, and predictive analytics has demonstrated how AI can enhance user experience and streamline operations. Some notable examples of AI-driven features include: Netflix’s recommendation engine is powered by AI to suggest personalized content. Google’s AI-based auto-completion in Gmail, which predicts and completes sentences as you type. Apple’s Face ID feature uses AI for facial recognition. Almost every software product now incorporates AI in some form. If you’re curious about the vast range of AI solutions available today, check out There’s an AI for That , which lists various AI products/solutions across various topics. The Role of Testers for AI Features As AI features become embedded in software products, testers are faced with new responsibilities. Testing an AI-powered system requires understanding how AI models behave, how they handle data, and whether they are ethically and accurately performing their intended functions. AI systems require not only functional testing but also non-functional testing related to accuracy, fairness, bias, and interoperability. Some of the most significant challenges include: Unpredictability of AI Behavior AI systems, especially those using machine learning (ML), evolve by learning from data. This results in non-deterministic behavior, meaning the system might behave differently when given the same input at different times due to changes in its learning patterns or environment. Testing deterministic software systems follows a predictable path, but testing AI introduces uncertainty. Data Dependency AI models heavily rely on data. The quality of the model depends on the quality and diversity of the training data. Testers face challenges ensuring that the training and test data are representative and unbiased. Testing AI systems means validating how well the model performs with diverse inputs, as poor-quality data can introduce bias or reduce accuracy. Explainability and Transparency AI systems, particularly deep learning models, are often referred to as “black boxes.” It is difficult for testers (and even developers) to understand how certain decisions are made. Testers need to assess if the AI system provides adequate justifications for its outcomes. Ethical Concerns Testers must assess whether AI models are ethically designed and implemented, particularly in areas such as bias, fairness, and discrimination. Testing for ethical AI requires scrutiny of data inputs and outputs, including legal, moral, and societal considerations. Testing Non-Functional Requirements Performance, security, scalability, and robustness become even more critical in AI systems. For instance, AI systems in high-stakes industries (like healthcare or autonomous driving) need to be extremely reliable and safe under various conditions. Dynamic Learning and Self-Improvement AI systems improve and adapt over time by learning from new data. This constant learning and retraining make it difficult to establish fixed baselines for testing or regression testing. Traditional static testing models may not apply here. What’s Been Changed in Testing with AI’s Progress? AI is fundamentally altering how testers approach their craft. On one hand, testers must adapt to the complexity of AI-based features embedded in software products, ensuring these systems operate fairly and efficiently. On the other, AI is making its way into the testing toolkit, offering exciting new possibilities for automation, test case generation, and bug detection. The increasing role of AI in the software development life cycle has introduced both opportunities and challenges for QA teams. Traditional testing approaches are being supplemented, and sometimes replaced, by AI-driven methodologies. Using AI in Testing While testing AI-based products is one aspect, the other side of the coin is using AI as a tool for testing itself . AI tools can assist testers in several ways, from automating repetitive tasks to generating test cases intelligently. Here are some of the main ways AI is reshaping the testing process: 1. AI-Driven Test Case Generation AI can automatically generate test cases by analyzing historical data, requirements, and the behaviour of the software under test. This reduces the manual effort required for creating test cases and ensures that more potential edge cases are covered. 2. AI-Powered Automation In the realm of automation, AI is particularly powerful in test script creation and maintenance. Tools like Testim , Functionize , and Applitools use AI to adapt to changes in the UI, reducing the burden of updating test scripts each time the software undergoes modifications. Disclaimer: Not associated nor doing a paid promotion for these aforementioned tools 3. AI for Regression Testing AI can optimize regression test suites by identifying the most critical test cases based on past run data. This can help testers save time and focus on high-risk areas. 4. AI-Assisted Bug Detection AI can identify patterns that indicate potential bugs or issues, even before traditional tests have been run. This predictive capability can help testers focus on areas that are more prone to defects. Some quick search on TAAFT website on software testing AI is far more than a mere buzzword for testers; it’s a transformative force reshaping the landscape of quality engineering. As both a powerful enabler and a new layer of complexity, AI is revolutionizing how testers approach their craft. Those who harness the potential of AI will not only elevate the quality of the products they test but also future-proof their careers, positioning themselves at the forefront of an AI-driven industry that demands innovation, adaptability, and forward-thinking expertise.
- Kansas City Current Ekes out Road Win Over Angel City FC
Claire Emslie celebrates after scoring a goal against KC Current. Photo by Angel City FC Playing in their second home game of the week, Angel City FC faced league leaders Kansas City Current and fell 3-1 at a sold-out BMO stadium crowd of 19,178. An organized ACFC defense kept KC Current's attack at bay, controlling the tempo in the first half and opening the scoring on the 34' with yet another Thomspson- Emslie connection. A well-placed short pass from Thompson after Emslie's burst in the box allowed the Scottish international to score a nifty goal from a left footed strike on an acute angle. This Emslie's third goal in two games and her fourth in six games played overall. But as disciplined as ACFC was in the first half, it was not enough to hold the fort against KC Current's offensive firepower. Three of Kansas City's attacking players lead the NWSL in goals scored through matchday 6. Madison Curry of ACFC heads the ball as KC Current's Chawinga Temwa defends. Photo by Angel City FC Momentum shifted after KC Current's Vanessa Di Bernardo unleashed a screamer to equalize in the 54'. Angel City found themselves defending mostly on their own half entering the 60th minute mark as the Current completed more than 200 passes with multiple shots on target. With the visiting team in control of ball possession, the end result was not decided until the final minutes of regulation. French supersub Claire Lavogez scored in the 90th minute from close range coming off a cross from Izzy Rodriguez. Then on injury time, the French international netted her second off an assist from forward Temwa Chawinga. Angel City FC's Iron Woman Sarah Gorden celebrates her 100th game appearance for the NWSL.
