Experience Music Documentaries at Tribeca Festival

From rock to rap, this year's music documentaries cover every beat.

This year’s Tribeca Festival is stacked with documentary programming celebrating the songs of the past and the music of today. Whether it’s a deep dive into the history behind your favorite band — from Counting Crows to Metallica to Boy George — or a feature focused on the musicians scoring the industry’s future — Wizkid, Becky G, Ty Dolla $ign — there’s a film for every fan.

But don’t just watch them on a screen; why not also see these artists live? Stick around after select premieres for performances from Billy Idol, The Linda Lindas, and Becky G.

Check out select music documentaries below and explore the full music catalog in our film guide.

Rebbeca

June 12 @ 7:00 PM | United Palace

Rebbeca takes you into the world of Becky G, one of Latin music’s brightest stars. As she embarks on her most personal album yet—her debut Mexican regional album—the film explores her past and the powerful journey of her family. From love and loss to addiction and recovery, Rebbeca captures how music has shaped Becky’s identity and connects her to her roots.

Plus, after the premiere: A performance by Becky G.

Still Free TC

June 13 @ 8:00 PM | SVA Theatre

Still Free TC is for music fans and those interested in the intersection of art and social justice. Ty Dolla $ign was working on a new album while his brother Gabriel continued to serve a 67-year murder sentence with little hope for release. Over two years, documentarians gained access to the influential producer, singer and multi-instrumentalist, providing a window into the life of an artist whose work transcends genre.

Plus, after the premiere: A conversation with Ty Dolla $ign.

Billy Idol Should Be Dead

June 10 @ 5:00 PM | OKX Theater at BMCC

Billy Idol Should Be Dead takes audiences on a raw, riveting ride through one of rock’s most iconic rebels. Using never-before-seen archival footage and intimate interviews, the film dives deep into Idol’s formative years and the personal chaos that nearly ended it all.

Plus, after the premiere: An intimate performance by Billy Idol.

Wizkid: Long Live Lagos

June 6 @ 8:00 PM | OKX Theater at BMCC

Following the Grammy-award winning Nigerian musician Wizkid from Lagos to the biggest stage in the world at Tottenham Stadium in London, Wizkid: Long Live Lagos is a raw look at the life of a boundary-pushing musician and an exploration of the modern history of Nigerian music.

Plus, after the premiere: A conversation with Wizkid and director Karam Gill.

Boy George & Culture Club

June 5 @ 8:00 PM | OKX Theater at BMCC

With humor, heart and a lot of glam, Boy George & Culture Club is a charming documentary that dives headfirst into the enduring bond of one of the most iconic bands of the ‘80s. Boy George & Culture Club is a love story about the undeniable fondness that flowed beneath the surface of these musical legends — and the drama and heartbreak in between.

Counting Crows: Have You Seen Me Lately?

June 5 @ 8:00 PM | Indeed Theater at Spring Studios

Counting Crows: Have You Seen Me Lately? provides an intimate portrait of the band and their frontman Adam Duritz. Told with rare access, the film traces Duritz and the band’s journey from accidental icons to artists reckoning with the mythos and machine built around them.

Metallica Saved My Life

June 11 @ 8:00 PM | OKX Theater at BMCC

Directed by Grammy-winning filmmaker Jonas Åkerlund, Metallica Saved My Life dives into the impact of the foundational heavy metal band Metallica. Through testimonies from dedicated followers and insights from the band, this film tells the stories of the group and the individuals whose lives have been changed by their music.

Plus, after the premiere: A conversation with members of Metallica and director Jonas Åkerlund.
